IOC Scotches Claims of Photo Ban for Sochi Journalists

MOSCOW, November 12 (R-Sport)
- There will be no ban on journalists taking photographs or using social media at next year’s Winter Olympics in Sochi, the International Olympic Committee told R-Sport on Tuesday following erroneous reports to the contrary.
A Russian report Monday falsely attributed statements about supposed restrictions for reporters to Vasily Konov, head of R-Sport, which is part of Sochi host news agency RIA Novosti, and the report was cited by numerous Russian and U.S. media outlets.
“As during the London 2012 Games, accredited media at the Sochi 2014 Olympic Games are free to use social media platforms or websites for reporting purposes in line with the social media guidelines for accredited persons,” the IOC said in a statement sent to R-Sport.
“There have been no rule changes from London and the media will be able to report from the Games venues in Sochi, including by social media, in the same way.”
Guideline on the IOC website state that journalists, even those without a specific photographer’s accreditation, can take photographs at the Sochi Games and post them on social media, although these should not be used for commercial purposes.
The Sochi Olympics run from February 7 to 23.
